• In case of fire or other emergency, from Campus phone call Public Safety at 911.
• Employees are not required to fight fires on University property. Unless item #3 below applies, all persons should evacuate the fire area immediately.
• Exception: Public Safety staff who are trained in the use of fire extinguishers are required to fight small fires.
• Employees and students may use fire extinguishers on small fires, in the incipient stage, if they have been trained in the proper use of fire extinguishers. They should be confident of their ability to cope with the hazards of a fire, and they should terminate firefighting efforts when it has become obvious that there is danger of harm from smoke, heat or flames.
• Large fires must be left to the municipal Fire Department personnel who are properly trained and equipped with the necessary protective clothing and equipment.
• Training in the use of fire extinguishers is available through the University Fire Marshal.
• Departments and offices are encouraged to consider the implications of emergencies that may be reasonably expected, such as fire or release of toxic chemicals. An Emergency Action Plan, appropriate to operational needs, and which describes the procedures to be taken by employees during such emergencies, is required. The Office of Environmental Health & Safety is available for assistance in developing a formal Emergency Action Plan.
