E-mail to Faculty and Staff assigned to specific buildings - Feb 19, 2015

The following e-mail was sent to faculty and staff who normally work in specific buildings around the time (and two hours after) a student with suspected measles was likely present.

YOUR ACTION REQUIRED REGARDING SUSPECTED MEASLES CASE

You are receiving this email because we believe you were born after Jan. 1, 1957, and were in the same area as the student with a suspected case of measles between Feb. 4 and Feb. 8.

Upon the recommendation of the New Jersey Department of Health, the Princeton Health Department is requiring that anyone on campus who may have been exposed to the student during specified times prove they are protected against measles.

The Health Department is requiring that you remain off campus and directing that you quarantine at home until you can prove you are protected.  You can prove you are protected by:

--Reporting that you were NOT in any of the locations listed below during the dates and times specified by contacting Employee Health Services at [email protected] or 609-258-5035.

OR

--Getting a blood test to prove you are protected

OR

--Providing records that you had measles in the past; have been vaccinated for measles (the measles vaccine or MMR vaccine); or have had a blood test showing protection against measles (rubeola, not rubella).

You can get a blood test to determine your protection against measles at Employee Health Services in McCosh Health Center from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 19, and Friday, Feb. 20and from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 21. There is no charge for you to get this test at Employee Health Services and no appointments are necessary. Despite the general requirement to remain off campus, you may come to campus for this test.  Blood test results may take two business days or longer.  You also may get the blood test through your primary care physician.

You may be able to obtain the required immunization records from your primary care physician, obstetrician, military records, school or college records, or previous employment records. Documentation may be faxed to Employee Health Services at 609-258-0976, emailed to [email protected] or brought to Employee Health Services in McCosh Health Center.

Until you can prove you are protected, the Health Department requires that you not be on campus and directs you to quarantine at home.  The length of quarantine depends on when you may have been exposed, but could extend as late as March 2. This means that you should stay off campus until you can provide the required proof.  If the University has not received proof within the next few days, the University is required to notify local and state health agencies in employees’ hometowns of their noncompliance. Agencies will then contact individuals and likely take action to quarantine them.

You are required to take action because:

You are an employee in Campus Dining, Building Services, Grounds and Building Maintenance, or Public Safety whose supervisor has reported that you were in one of the buildings that the student with suspected measles visited.

Please note that faculty and staff who were in the areas listed above but were born before Jan. 1, 1957 have not received this note because they are considered by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to be immune to measles.
